skateQilya

In an attempt to understand more about the region of Israel/Palestine we searched for knowledge, statements and possibilities to visit the West Jordan Land – reachable quite easily from Jerusalem, were we were based in April and end of may 2018. We produced the piece Musraraopera there during an invitation of the Naggar Multidisciplinary School of Art and Society and for the presentation the Musrara Mix Festival 18. The task was to search for information and to exchange it with artistic information that we could provide – a concert including participation. After searching intensively we found Mohammed Othman, a former Westbank guide, activist and founder of skateQilya, a Palestinian private institution using skateboarding to teach art, leadership and community building to girls and boys in Palestine.
The tour was very impressive, to say it positive, depressing and frustrating, to hit more the reality – an Apartheid system and situation of oppression came to our observation.. but… this incredible power and joy of the youth of Qalqilya, skateboarding, showing us their skills, and the curiosity about us, contrasted the experience we just had a couple hours before. The concert did not happen, because of the lack of speakers, but the voices of the kids we got to know made their ways into the Musraropera soundscapes.
